RIDE #7: After climbing Camino Alto, this week we'll continue through a number of lovely, small towns to a popular bike destination -- Fairfax. The roads to Fairfax are fairly flat, but feature LOTS of opportunity to train in street riding and develop patience with traffic and stop signs. On our return, we will scoot BACK up Camino Alto (many say it's easier climbing this side), then return to SF via Sausalito.
NOTE: Meets at Sports Basement on the OLD Mason Street in the Presidio (*NOT* downtown -- there are two Mason Streets in SF, so please check the map); meet in the parking lot near the Salvation Army collection trailer, away from the store entrance.
The SF Cat 1 "INTRO" Training is a progressive set of ten rides offered especially for those of us who are new to biking or ALC, a bit rusty in the saddle, feeling a bit more like the Tortoise than the Hare (Category 1 riders), or who merely want to add some Saturday fun to their training schedules this winter. We're interested in welcoming our newest riders and helping you get comfortable on your bikes and in the life of ALC riding. Of course, our more seasoned or speedier comrades are also invited to join us -- you'd be great support in welcoming our first-year riders into the family. We'll begin with a few shorter, relatively flat SF rides, then strike out over the Golden Gate Bridge to enjoy routes that each week will include a few more miles and/or increasingly respectable hill climbing. (You'll also notice they start earlier and earlier to allow us time to cover the miles and climb those hills.) By the end of Ride 10, you'll have completed a 50-mile route (half a Century!) and conquered some of the more challenging climbs in the Bay Area pantheon. The Big Idea is to allow you a chance to:
1) become more familiar with and comfortable on your bikes; 2) learn important habits of safe and fun group riding in ALC; 3) meet new ALC friends, including ride buddies you can train with on your own schedule; 4) introduce you to SF-area bike routes you can use to train on your own, outside of ALC's scheduled, organized rides; 5) develop endurance and some "I-can-I-will" moxie in hill-climbing; and 6) have a reason to look forward to getting out of bed and into the saddle on Saturday mornings -- we'll be expecting you!
Remember to bring layers of gear for the nippy weather and something to snack on throughout the ride. And we're especially eager to hear any random questions or concerns you may have. If there is enough time before we stretch and recite the Safety Pledge, Ride Leaders will be glad to field bike or riding questions from the group and share tips for the day.
