Thank you for joining me in this cause!
June 5th - June 11th, over 3,000 Cyclists, Roadies and Virtual Cyclists will be participating in AIDS/LifeCycle, a 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for the life-saving services offered by San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. This year, I'll be one of them!
For those of you that know me, you know this cause is very close to my head and heart. This will be the 3rd time I've chosen to participate in ALC in an effort to draw productive attention and advocacy while fighting harmful stigma for people living with HIV and AIDS, specifically people of color. Over the past few years, I have learned that Blacks/African Americans account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses and people living with HIV, compared to other races/ethnicities. In 2017, blacks/African Americans accounted for 13% of the US population but 43% (16,694) of the 38,739 new HIV diagnoses in the United States and dependent areas. There are a ton of reasons as to why this statistic exists, but the bottom line is, this is not okay. To be alive during a time when these diagnoses are no longer a death sentence is incredible. At the same time, I know we've lost thousands of beautiful people along the way.
So with that, I choose to ride in AIDS/LifeCycle because it's important for me to say that those lives weren't taken in vain. This year, I will be proudly riding with team #Misfitz - a team that celebrates humanity and keeps inclusion at the core. Together, we ride and we work to shine light onto the promise for those thriving with HIV/AIDS.
