My friends and family have always said about me, "Where there isn't a challenge, I find one." In line with that lifelong habit, I signed up to ride my bike 545 miles in a week for AIDS/LifeCycle. From May 31st to June 6th, over 3,000 Cyclists, Roadies and Virtual Cyclists will be participating in AIDS/LifeCycle, a 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for the life-saving services offered by San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. This year, I’ll be one of them! Not only is that a physical feat on a scale I've never attempted; I've also never been very good at asking people for money. So here I am, doing exactly those two things.
The funds I collect will go to support AIDS research, outreach, treatment, and advocacy by the Los Angeles LGBT Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. AIDS disproportionately impacts members of the queer community, people in lower socioeconomic brackets, and people of color. Many of our community's most visible losses have come on the heels of illness secondary to HIV/AIDS: Freddie Mercury, Gia Carangi, Eazy-E, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Rock Hudson, just to name a few. And being 'poz' is still a scarlet letter for too many people. I'm riding for AIDS/LifeCycle not only because it's way out of my comfort zone; but because living with HIV/AIDS shouldn't be so far out of anyone else's.
LA LGBT has made a tremendous impact in my own life, and their volunteers give millions of dollars' worth of their time and money to treat members of underserved communities. Together, the two organizations are working to end the stigma, raise awareness, and find a cure. I'm honored to have the opportunity to ride and make a contribution, but I need your help to do it. I ride May 31 - June 6, 2020; and I have to raise a minimum of $3,000 by May 2020 to participate. I think together, we can double that. Are you in?
UPDATE 11/08/2019: Thanks to the generous gifts of family and friends, I've managed to raise $461.20 for the ride! With my company's donation matching, this works out to at least $900 raised for AIDS Life/Cycle. I'm impressed with our progress, and super excited to actually be able to go on the ride. I've been training hard - So far, I've ridden at least 40 miles a week since I started training the first week of October, and this week I'm looking to up that to 60 miles with a training ride I'm doing on Sunday!
My first goal is $1000 raised by 11/22/2019, and I need to raise a minimum of $3,000 by May 2020. Please share my page with your friends and family and encourage them to give to my cause!
I'm also looking to run some fundraising events coming up this month and next, so stay tuned for details on those. Right now I'm looking at destressing and self-care activities around the holidays, because we all could use some of that.
UPDATE 12/17/2019: As of today, I am halfway to the minimum I need to raise to ride. Yay! I'd better step up my training - things are looking optimistic! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far. Tell your family and friends, and send them my page! Every little bit of donations on my behalf helps someone in need!
UPDATE 12/31/2019: Wow, y'all!
Thanks to the generous donations of family and friends, I achieved my $3,000 minimum just before Christmas! It's official, I'm going on the ride. I can hardly believe it. I've been biking to commute to work, but I want to step up my game now that it's for certain that I'll be riding from San Francisco to LA. I'm also 54% of the way to that goal of $6,000, so please do continue to spread the word! Thank you to those who have donated! What an epic opportunity.
