This June I was supposed to be joining 3000 of my AIDS/LifeCycle friends on our annual epic 545-mile bicycle journey down the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The AIDS/LifeCycle raises money and awareness to support HIV and AIDS treatment and prevention programs. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the leadership of the ALC had to make the difficult decision to cancel the ride this year. The decision is certainly understandable and really the only decision that could be made.
Now, the need for the funds is ever greater as many HIV positive people who receive health insurance through their employers are finding themselves without coverage. The ride being canceled has left the San Francisco Aids Foundation and the LA Gay and Lesbian Center in a severe financial crisis.
The ALC leadership has asked all of the participants in the ride, both Riders and Roadies to continue to fund raise and to pledge to do something on our own that represents the 545 miles we would have ridden this year.
I have decided to pledge to ride 545 miles from May 4th to June 4th on my own in order to demonstrate my commitment and to ask my cherished donors to continue to donate. I am an essential health care worker, so I really can’t take time off during this crisis. However, I will ride my bike to and from work every day that I work on-site in order to accomplish my goal. My commute is a 30-mile round trip. I’ll also have to throw in some Saturday rides to reach my goal.
I realize that this request may find many of you at a financially unstable time. I will not be offended if you are unable to donate because of personal financial difficulties. However, I ask if you are lucky enough to still have enough income coming in to take care of yourself and your loved ones, to consider making a donation to the ALC. Any amount will help.
Also, as the ALC is an alcohol and drug free event, I’ve pledged to myself to not drink alcohol and abstain from the Maryjane for the entire month of May. Coping with Covid-19 has increased both of those activities for me and this is a good excuse to nip that in the bud. Pun completely intended.
So please, if you are able, make a donation today.
