This June I was supposed to be joining 3000 of my AIDS/LifeCycle friends on our annual epic 545-mile bicycle journey down the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles. However, once again, this vital fundraising activity had to be canceled due to Covid-19. The AIDS/LifeCycle community has rallied in this difficult time and came up with a new event to raise money and awareness to support HIV and AIDS treatment and prevention programs. This year instead of the one week long ride, the members of the ALC community are banding together physically separate but united in our goal to individually challenge ourselves to ride as many miles as possible in order to cumulatively achieve the audacious goal of riding 1.2 million miles by June 30 2021. This monumental mileage goal is to honor the 1.2 million people in the US living with HIV. Together we are striving to make sure that all people have access to testing, care, and prevention services.
Now, the need for the funds is ever greater as many HIV positive people who receive health insurance through their employers are finding themselves without coverage. The ride being canceled has left the San Francisco Aids Foundation and the LA Gay and Lesbian Center in a severe financial crisis.
I have decided to pledge to ride 1000 miles from January 16th to June 30th on my own in order to demonstrate my commitment and to ask my cherished donors to continue to donate. I am an essential health care worker, so I really can’t take much time off during this crisis. However, I will ride my bike to and from work and continue my weekend rides in order to achieve my goal.
I realize that this request may find many of you at a financially unstable time. I will not be offended if you are unable to donate because of personal financial difficulties. However, I ask if you are lucky enough to still have enough income coming in to take care of yourself and your loved ones, to consider making a donation to the ALC. Any amount will help. If you are unable to donate this year, please consider forwarding my email to someone who you think would be moved to make a donation.
Please, if you are able, make a donation today.
