June 2019 I will be riding my fifth AIDS/LifeCycle, more than 545 miles down the state of California from San Francisco to Los Angeles. All money goes to benefit the programs and services of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Over the past four years I have been able to raise over $20,000 for the SF AIDS Foundation with your help!
"The idea of leaving a legacy is the need or the desire to be remembered for what you have contributed to the world. In some cases, that contribution can be so special that the universe is unalterably changed."
Contributions come in many forms.
Your donations undoubtedly leave a legacy...every dollar you give helps to save lives. And as soon as you hit that donation button I hope you feel the rush of adrenaline that comes with knowing you have made an impact. Because you have. To me and countless others.
Your emotional and psychological support also helps leave a legacy. When I set out on Day 1 with many miles, hills, waterstops and campsites in my future I am tempted into fear and intimidation. But then I see cheering fans. And I remember every single donor who said "I believe in you. You got this. I am counting on you." And when you think about the power of just listening and caring...those contributions are priceless and the impact can be felt long into the future.
And when i think of legacy I cannot stop to think about my own.
See ten years ago I didn't know if the ambitions I had for my life would still be possible.
On Halloween 2008, in a visit to my doctor, I was given news that no young 24 year old is prepared to hear. "Michael. I am so sorry. Your test results came back positive. You have HIV."
The compassionate care and access to some of the best medical advancements in treatment that would follow were and are life saving. And...they would only go so far to help keep my "head in the game". It would take many years for me to dig myself out of toxic shame. But I did and it remains a daily process. And along my own journey I vow to help others who might be making their way through shame.
Why I Ride
I ride because I am HIV. We are HIV. We are all impacted by this in some way or form. It's global. It's local. And we can make change.
I ride to bring awareness. I want to see a day when there is no stigma. I want to see a day when there are no more infections. I want to see a future where conversations about sexual and mental health are open, vulnerable, safe and productive...and not rooted in fear.
And, I ride to be apart of a loving, supportive community who teach me how to live my life with compassion each and every day.
