This is my seventh year participating in ALC. It is a 545-mile, 7-day bicycle trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles is challenging, exhausting and wonderful. This is how I honor those friends who have left us, their lives shortened by AIDS.
This year I not sure whether I’ll be pedaling or driving to Los Angeles due to business obligations. I will be participating as a Trailing Ride Leader (for my sixth year), helping others become comfortable riding a bike for long distances, and wherever else I can help.
Your donation to this event helps to provide many essential services for prevention and care. While government funding sometimes provides the bulk of the resources to deliver vital services, private support like yours bridges the gap (up to 30%) and provides the resources to expand critical services beyond current government funding limitations and fully serve those in need. Services such as
- harm reduction counseling, which integrates substance use, mental health, and HIV prevention and education counseling;
- peer advocates, who help clients get to their doctor appointments and assist them with daily living activities;
- HIV and STD tests, treatment, education and counseling, condom distribution, needle exchange, drug abuse counseling;
- financial benefits counseling to assist in navigating the private and public benefits systems such as Medi-Cal, Medicare, CARE/HIPP, short-term disability, and Social Security.
AIDS disproportionately impacts people of color; the greatest number of new HIV infections - 42% - occurs in bi and gay young black/African American and Latino men aged 13–24. In fact, young black and Latino men account for 55% of new HIV infections among young men overall. The third group affected as disproportionately is heterosexual black women, accounting for 13% of new HIV infections.
It’s a tax-deductible donation and any amount is a great donation. If you prefer, you can spread your donation across multiple months by using a credit card. Corporate matching gifts can double the amount of your donation!
