I was convinced that I wasn't going to do it. I even promise Jeff & myself that I was taking 2018 off.
As physically & mentally rewarding doing the ALC ride for 3 years in a row has been, it has also been a big time commitment between all the training, raising money & helping leading the Walmart Team. The incredible support & generosity from so many friends, family & even complete strangers that has helped me raised over $40k has truly touched my heart & highlights the beautiful nature of people but I was starting to feel burned out. Plus during the last ride, there were some politics or at a minimum oversights from the ALC organization that truly disappointed me as well as other Walmart's riders.
Today on MLK anniversary, I had a change of heart. What made me change my mind is seeing the the ugly, hateful and backwards sentiment in our country that has been growing during the last year. Our new leadership has brought the worst out of a lot of us across conservatives, liberals and everything in between including myself. So instead of wasting my time arguing/defending my point of view, I'm going to focus on doing something positive.
The final straw was finding out that Trump fired the remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Also learning that some members had stepped down due to "The Trump Administration has no strategy to address the on-going HIV/AIDS epidemic, seeks zero input from experts to formulate HIV policy, and -- most concerning .. pushes legislation that will harm people living with HIV & halt or reverse important gains made in the fight against this disease. Because we do not believe the Trump Administration is listening to -- or cares -- about the communities we serve as members of PACHA, we have decided it is time to step down." These are truly scary times!
So Instead of continuing fighting with others on social media while filling my heart with anger, resentment and helpless, I choose to get on a bike & do my share to fight one of the ways I know. I will ride 545 miles from San Francisco to LA to help reduce new HIV infections & improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS. I'm Encouraging my Phoenix to rise again from the ashes leaving behind negativity, resentment, illnesses and any other weakness so I can fly higher than I have ever before!
Plus I have to be honest and admit that I missed spending hours riding with friends, making new ones plus being part of that damn love bubble!
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." MLK
Riding, Loving, Living.
Wanted to share with you that I will be doing the ALC ride for the 3rd year in a row with a goal of $15K. In addition, I will be a co-captain for Team Walmart which means that I will spend the months leading up to the ride, training our team plus leading fundraising initiatives.
So as you are considering making tax deductible donations before the end of the year, I ask that you consider making a donation to my ride. All your support so far has meant the world to me.
Year 3 - 3rd time is a charm!
Thank you for all of you that have supported me during the last two years while doing the Ride.
As promised, we won't stop until we find a cure!
In 2017, I'm thrilled to continue riding for a cure and raising money to save lives and continue to raise awareness. I have also decided to be a captain for the Walmart team. Lord have mercy on me... or better yet, on my team!
Your support means the world to me and more importantly it is means that more people will be able to get the services necessary to stay healthy and alive.
So come and join me on my 2017 ALC journey cuz I promise to make it more fun, wild, trashy and unpredictable than ever before all while raising $15K!
