My name is Maritza Munzon and my friends Albert Ontiveros and Abraham Torrico inspired me to join, for years I made small contributions to their fundraising goals and thought it was about time I join them on this AIDS/Lifecycle journey. I have volunteered/fundraised for other causes in the past but never anything like this, especially not on a bike! Luckily, you never forget how to ride those, right?...
Why I Joined
Personally, I signed up for this crazy adventure because this is a physical challenge I did not think I was capable of, Albert "the pusher" thinks otherwise, I finally believe him. For years I suffered from digestive issues, doctors dismissed my symptoms and told me it was in my head. I finally found a doctor who listened and in Nov 2018, I was diagnosed with Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO), a condition that damages the small intestine to the point where you are unable to absorb nutrients. I didn't know it but I was living on fumes, deficient in many nutrients. At one point I was struggling to get through an 8-hr workday. I am now at a point where I have started healing and feel that I can take this challenge on, crossing that finish line is going to make me feel like Wonder Women. I am looking forward to being able to do that in a post-COVID world.
To me the ride represents heath and since I can't ride my bike 545-mile mile from San Francisco to Los Angeles like we usually would I pledged to bike, run, walk 545 by June 2021.
My pledge and fundraising efforts ensure that others can get the care they need then this is all well worth it. The funds I raise go towards the life-saving services offered by San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
Cyclepaths do this fundraising thing in style, mostly in drag, so keep an eye out for over the top, incredibly fun fundraising events. You can have fun AND do good, it's a win/win situation.
We are working together to make HIV/AIDS a thing of the past because to live would be an awfully big adventure.
