Thank you for joining me in this cause!
I’ll be participating in AIDS/LifeCycle, a 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to support the life-saving services offered by San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the LA LGBT Center. This bike ride means the world to those who receive treatment as a result of this event, and your support means the world to me.
I have been involved with the LGBT community for my entire professional career and have had the privilege to know some incredible mentors that have told me about their past. The first story that someone ever told me about the 1970's HIV/AIDS epidemic was traumatizing. When she visited her friends who were dying from AIDS, she found them all alone in their hospital rooms. No nurses would dare enter because of the fear of what this mysterious disease could do. She remembered picking up the uneaten trays of food that were left abandoned in the hallway by the hospital staff because they were fearful for their own lives. She and her friends that came with her defiantly picked up those trays and for their comrades that were too weak to even feed themselves. When she told me that this was one of the few times that she could remember the LGBT community truly coming together to take care of each other, it made me so incredibly sad and angry and proud. Sad for those that had to experience that, angry at the system, and proud of my fierce community coming together to fight back at the root of all of those negative emotions. When I arrived at the closing ceremonies to welcome my best friend home from ALC 2014, I felt that pride again. I felt all of those mixed emotions with the entire crowd. I wanted to be a part of that diverse community that came together for a cause.
I ride for the heroes that I will never have a chance to learn from, the friends that I will never have, and the stories that should never be told. I ride to be a part of a proud community that will put an end to HIV/AIDS.
We’re working together to make HIV/AIDS a thing of the past. Will you support me by making a donation today?
