Hi! Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for joining me in the fight to END AIDS!
Last year I did my first AIDS/Lifecycle, as a rider. It was an incredible experience, I had always wanted to ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles ever since I started cycling in high school. When my friends James and Arbel told me about ALC and asked me to join them I jumped at the opportunity to realize my own dream while doing something to benefit others. But after signing up I started to worry that I would seem inauthentic, believing that I had zero connection to AIDS/HIV or the LGBT community and fearing that I would be looked at as an outsider trying to weasel my way into something that wasn't for me. Nothing could have been further from the truth, not only was I welcomed but very quickly I had the sobering realization that my life was not as far removed from the AIDS epidemic as I had believed. From the very first event I attended nearly a year before the ride to the final day riding into WeHo , I have never felt anything but love, acceptance and appreciation from everyone and anyone I have met. We have a name for that feeling, we call it the Love-Bubble and I am hoping you will join me in it this year by making a donation to my ALC 2018 Fundraising.
This year I have decided to take a different path and be a part of the Roadie crew, working with the bike tech team I will be out and about on the course keeping riders safe and on the road! I have also signed up to be a Training Ride Leader to help riders prepare for the course with cycling training as well as teaching bike maintenance workshops! I had such a fantastic time at my first ALC, and met so many incredible people volunteering to make it possible for all the riders to just wake up and ride effortlessly that I wanted to do the same for the next round of newbies. But none of this happens without support and in the end it's about so much more than a week long bike ride. So I have once again set my fundraising goal at $10k and hope that you will join me and the rest of the ALC community in our commitment to end AIDS/HIV.
The money raised by AIDS/Lifecycle does much more than just fund research or awareness. I have recently been given a tour of the Los Angeles LGBT Center and shown exactly what my fundraising dollars are used for and, if possible, I would encourage you to do the same. The wonderful people there offer all kinds of services from temporary housing for at-risk youth, community housing for Seniors, counseling services, legal assistance, safe havens and of course the testing and treatment for AIDS/HIV. They also run programs that help youth gain life skills and independence, encourage the youth and senior communities to help each other grow and stay active and much more to help our community end the threat of AIDS/HIV. A few examples of what donations will be used for: $100 provides 5 Rapid HIV Antibody tests, $500 provides HIV prevention counseling to 60 teens, $1000 covers a full year of medical supply costs for 40 patients and $10,000 provides 250 people with substance abuse counseling for a month.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and please, click the donation button and join us in the Love-Bubble!!!
May your god or other non-corporeal deity bless you, and remember, the Force will be with you, always!
