WHAT and WHEN?
ALC (AIDS/LifeCycle) is an event in which over 3,000 Cyclists, Roadies and Virtual Cyclists bike ride 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
The purpose is to raise funds for the life-saving services offered by San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. The services provided as a result of this event mean the world to those who receive them, and your support means the world to me.

This year, once again I’ll be one of them! Isn’t that exciting? I am rider #3727.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO ME?
Since the AIDS epidemic, the longevity and the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS have substantially changed. However, the fight is not over. Drug costs, side effects and stigma still make living with HIV harder than it should be.
Having grown up in Brazil, stigma hits too close to home. People are still afraid of getting tested for HIV, leading to cases in which one’s status is only discovered when it is already too late for a successful treatment. A couple of years ago, I lost one of my best friends to HIV. He was not only tested and diagnosed with HIV too late in the game, but he also had difficulties with getting access to proper care. To top if all off, due to stigma in a very religious country, he had to navigate this all by himself. In less than a year, my friend passed.
I believe that by raising awareness and proper education we can end the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. That is one of the reasons why I am riding this year.
