Several years ago I began a journey that involved riding my bike for hours and miles on end to prepare to ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles over seven days — an odyssey that logs 545 miles over that week. During the six years I devoted to AIDS Lifecycle I raised more than $34,000 to help those with HIV/AIDS. The money raised because of the generosity of my sponsors has helped provide lifesaving HIV and AIDS prevention, testing, counseling, and education through the Los Angeles LGBT Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
But beyond the miles and the funds raised, AIDS Lifecycle's contribution to my life has been immeasurable in terms of the beautiful, generous, wickedly funny people I met during training or on the actual ride. I continue to ride with several of those friends weekly, traversing hills and canyons as we laugh uncontrollably and plan our next cappuccino stop (bathroom stop for me). We affectionately call our little group "The Squad."
Following a banner year in 2015, I took three years off from the big ride—Lifecycle—and participated in a couple of other wonderful charity rides. I raised money for cancer research, which is near and dear to me having lost my father and my beloved aunt to cancer when I was too young, and I raised money for people with intellectual developmental disabilities. I carried on those rides the endurance, training, and generous spirit I learned from my extended Lifecycle family. I may have gone away from Lifecycle for a few years, but Lifecycle never left me.
This year I'm back with the cause that impacted me beyond measure when I was coming up and out in the late '80s and watching so many creative, beautiful people in the LGBTQ community leave us or else live in fear that they would.
I have committed to raising $10,000 for Lifecycle this year and I could use your help making that happen. While great strides have been made in prevention, education, and treatment around HIV and AIDS, the fight to eradicate HIV and AIDS and to create a world free from the stigma around it is far from over.
Please join in me in the fight with whatever you're able to donate. I carry each of my sponsors in my heart when I ride and I am continually blown away by the generosity of the people in my life.
Much love and thanks,
